If you’re having trouble installing the SpikeRecorder app on your Windows 11 device, it’s likely because your system is configured to only allow apps from the Microsoft Store. Since SpikeRecorder is distributed outside the Microsoft Store, Windows will block the installation until you change this security setting.
How to Fix It: Allow Apps From Anywhere
To enable installation of apps that are not from the Microsoft Store, follow these steps:
-
Open Settings
PressWindows + I
on your keyboard to open the Settings app. -
Go to Apps
In the left-hand menu, click on “Apps.” -
Access Advanced App Settings
On Windows 11, click “Advanced app settings.” -
Change App Installation Preference
Look for a section titled “Choose where to get apps” or “Installing apps.” -
Allow External Installations
From the drop-down menu, select one of these options:- Allow apps from anywhere (recommended for SpikeRecorder)
- *Prefer apps from the Store, but allow apps from anywhere
Additional Tips
- If you’re using a school or work device, these options might be managed by your system administrator. In that case, you will need IT support to enable installation from outside the Microsoft Store.
- Once you’ve changed the setting, run the SpikeRecorder installer again. It should now install successfully without any warnings or blocks.
Why this happens:
By default, Windows 11 is configured to install only apps from the Microsoft Store for security reasons. Because SpikeRecorder is an external application, you need to manually allow installations from other sources before proceeding.
